What is Makhana
Makhana, also known as fox nuts or lotus seeds, is a nutrient-rich snack derived from the seeds of the Euryale Fox plant, commonly grown in India. It is rich in protein, fiber, and antioxidants, making it a healthy alternative to processed snacks. Traditionally roasted and lightly seasoned, makhana is enjoyed for its crunchy texture and numerous health benefits.
Makhana Production and Growing Export Market
Makhana, also known as fox nuts or lotus seeds, is predominantly cultivated in the Indian state of Bihar, which accounts for approximately 90% of the global production. The Mithila region, encompassing districts like Madhubani, Darbhanga, and Samastipur, is particularly renowned for its makhana cultivation.
In terms of export trade, India has seen significant growth in recent years. Between March 2023 and February 2024, India exported 4,601 shipments of makhana, marking a 24% increase compared to the previous year.
In the fiscal year 2019-2020, India exported approximately 11,777 tonnes of makhana and related products, valued at ₹1,385.9 million.
This upward trend underscores the growing global demand for this nutritious superfood.

Why it is called superfood?

Good for Heart Health
Makhana is good for heart health because it is naturally low in cholesterol and sodium, while its high potassium content (500mg per 100g) helps regulate blood pressure, and antioxidants like kaempferol reduce inflammation linked to heart diseases.
